Alle begin is moeilijk - Every start is difficult

Druk, druk, druk, de afgelopen weken. En tja, dan blijft de blog al wel eens liggen. Een probleem waar menig blogster af en toe mee kampt, geef toe.
De maand september was niet alleen op het thuisfront erg hectisch: zo'n 2 schoolgaande tieners terug in het gelid krijgen, vraagt heel wat inspanning (al zullen de tieners die volledig voor eigen rekening nemen :-)). En ook Mme Stina had heel wat activiteiten. Zo waren daar de 3de editie van Hip & Handig, in ons eigenste Leuven en Le Marché Sucré, een zalig handmade marktje in Malderen. Waar Mme Stina weer heel veel enthousiaste mede-creatievelingen leerde kennen.

Been busy, busy, busy the past few weeks. And Mme Stina's blog was very lonesome, having no update at all. A problem many blogger faces, occasionally. Isn't it?
The month of September was not only very hectic on the home front: two teenage pupils had to be put back in ranks. And that requires a lot of effort (though the teenagers will fully take this on their own account :-)). 
And Mme Stina also had a lot of activities. There was the 3rd edition of Hip & Handig, in our very own Leuven and Le Marché Sucré, a delightful handmade market in Malderen. Where Mme Stina again met many enthusiastic fellow creatives.

Maar afgelopen weekend was toch wel bijzonder: Mme Stina gaf haar allereerste, echte workshop/haakles aan enkele geïnteresseerden. Tijdens de eerste dag tegen eetstoornissen zorgde Mme Stina voor een uurtje ontspanning tijdens de workshop "ik begin te haken". Ze zou de "leerlingen" het allereerste begin van haken aanleren, met andere woorden "hoe zet je een beginlus op?". Om verder te gaan met de "losse" of "kettingsteek" en te eindigen met "de vaste".
En met die luttele kennis hebben de "leerlingen" voldoende bagage om een origineel Mme Stina's krullerig frutselsjaaltje te maken, iets waar vele mensen telkens weer verbaasd over zijn. Zo'n sjaaltje ziet er moeilijk uit maar is eigenlijk supergemakkelijk!

But last weekend was very special: Mme Stina gave her first, real workshop/crocheting course to a couple of enthusiastic people. During the first Dag tegen Eetstoornissen Mme Stina provided a relaxing hour during the workshop "I start to hook". She would be teaching the "students" the very beginning of crocheting, in other words, "how do you make a slip knot?". To continue with the "chain stitch"  and to end with the "single crochet".
And with only that little bit of knowledge, the "students" have enough luggage for an original Mme Stina's curly furly scarf. Such scarf looks difficult but is actually super easy!

Dus begon Mme Stina, alle begin is moeilijk, met het  stap-voor-stap uitschrijven van de voor haar vanzelfsprekende handelingen. Want er is toch niets leukers dan dat je na het leren van een nieuwe vaardigheid, even kan teruggrijpen tot de basisuitleg.

En ze ging op zoek naar deze basisbeschrijving op het internet: zou ze enkele links opnemen in haar handleiding van YouTube filmpjes over haken? Of wat kopies maken uit haar naslagwerken? Of misschien gewoon "zelf" maken? Want Mme Stina staat toch voor "handmade"? Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Ze tekende de handleiding dan maar zelf.

So Mme Stina starts with, every beginning is difficult, a step-by-step manual writing out all steps that are so obvious to her. She always find it very pleasant being able to have a good description after learning a new skill.

And she start searching this basic description on the internet: perhaps she could add some links  in her manual of YouTube videos about crocheting? Or make some copies of her favourite books? Or maybe just make it "herself"? For Mme Stina stands for "handmade"? And so she did! She draw the manual herself:

Dus kon de workshop beginnen:  Mme Stina had alle informatie bij de hand. En toen de cursisten hun haaknaald en draad in de hand namen en wilden beginnen ... bleek één van hen "linkshandig". Oei! Dan lukt die handleiding niet! Tja, alle begin is moeilijk, ook voor Mme Stina (en de linkshandige cursist, die zal volgende keer een eigen persoonlijke handleiding vinden bij Mme Stina. Reken maar!)

And the workshop could start: Mme Stina was prepared. The students took their crocheting hook and wool in their hands and started ... but one of them appaered to be "left-handed". Oops! Then the manual is no good! Well, every start is difficult, even for Mme Stina (and the left-handed student, he will receive a personal manual for left-handed crocheting. Betcha!)

Welk experiment eerst? Which experiment shall I complete?

Mme Stina is in haar experimentele fase. Want ze doet niets liever dan nieuwe dingen uitdokteren en uitproberen. Tenslotte is gebreid vilten iets helemaal anders dan vilt leggen. Daarom is ze steeds op zoek naar nieuwe manieren om het verschil tussen beide in de schijnwerpers te zetten.

At the moment, Mme Stina's in an experimental mood. She is fond of trying new things. Cause knitted felting is completely different from ordinary felting. So she's constantly looking for new ways to put the difference between these 2 techniques in the spotlights.

Pas op! Mme Stina vindt vilten sjaals prachtig. Ze kan erg genieten van de ware kunstwerken die viltsters onder hun handen tevoorschijn toveren. Maar geef toe, waarom zou je bij gebreid vilten net hetzelfde proberen na te streven als bij het leggen van vilt? Het leuke is net om de verschillen tussen beide goed in de verf te zetten. De manier waarop de kleuren in elkaar overgaan, vormen, structuren, dat zijn de dingen waarmee je een onderscheid kan maken.

Of course, Mme Stina likes felted scarfs and hats a lot. She really enjoys the pieces of art some people can achieve by only felting some wool. But you must admit it, why would you try to obtain an exact copy of a felted scarf using the knitted felting techniques. It's fun to show and tell about the difference between the 2 of them. Colours, shapes, structures, it are those things where you can make the difference.

En zo had Mme Stina nog een experiment in haar achterhoofd zitten dat ze absoluut wilde uitproberen: breien met verkorte naalden. Door de naalden niet volledig uit te breien krijg je een golvend patroon. Zo ziet het zijpand eruit:

Mme Stina had an idea to try to knit with abbreviated rows. By not knitting the whole row, you get a waving pattern. The first side of the purse:

Maar dat valt tegen. De kleurovergangen zijn niet subtiel genoeg en als je de verkorte naalden te abrupt op elkaar laat opvolgen, komt het ook niet goed.
Mme Stina heeft trouwens zo'n stemmetje in haar hoofd waar ze uit ondervinding weet dat ze er maar beter naar luistert. En op dit moment is dat stemmetje aan het grommelen. Grommelende stemmetjes, dat betekent (meestal, ook stemmetjes kunnen de bal soms misslaan) teleurstellingen. Neen, dit experiment moest beter!

But Mme Stina is not satisfied. The gradient colours are not subtle enough and knitting shortened rows to quickly after each other, doesn't give a good result.
Besides, in Mme Stina's head lives a little voice. And Mme Stina knows from experience that she better listens to this little voice. At the moment, the voice is grumbling. And grumbling voices means (most at the time, sometimes, also a little voice is wrong :-) trouble and disappointment. No, this experiment must be redone!

Wat zit er nog in dat achterhoofd? Aha! Het honingratenpatroon, ooit al gebruikt voor een rondgebreide sjaalkraag. Snel het aantal steken aanpassen aan het patroon, de 1ste naald breien .... Nee, niet goed. Echt niet. De randen van de honingraten komen niet goed uit. Hoe lost Mme Stina dit nu weer op .....

Are there any other ideas in Mme Stina's head? Aha! The pattern of honeycombs, she once used to knit this scarf. Adapt the number of stiches, knit the first row ... No, again not good. Not good indeed. The edges of the honeycombs don't come out in this pattern. How can Mme Stina solves this....

Tussen de bedrijven door - Between the lines

Het tempo waarop Mme Stina haar creaties toont via deze blog, is de laatste maanden en weken heel wat lager dan ze zou willen. Sinds ze gestart is met de verkoop van haar lievelingsgaren en ook regelmatig een Mme Stina-standje opbouwt op de vele handmademarktjes die tegenwoordig zo populair zijn, ontbreekt haar vaak de tijd om iets voor Mme Stina zelf of één van de mademoiselles te maken.

The pace on which Mme Stina shows her creations on this blog, the last few months and weeks, is much lower than she would like. Since she started selling her favorite yarn and regular set up a Mme Stina-stand at the many handmade markets that are currently so popular, she's often missing the time to create something for Mme Stina herself or one of the mademoiselles.

Zeker als je kies voor zulke megaprojecten (en sommigen verklaren Mme Stina echt gék) zoals de plaid voor de oudste mademoiselle, vliegen de weken voorbij zonder dat er een toonbaar resultaat is. Mme Stina kan jullie toch moeilijk nóg een foto van een "aangekleed" tuinpad tonen, niet?

Especially when you choose such mega projects (and some state Mme Stina really crazy) as the plaid for the oldest mademoiselle, the weeks fly by without a presentable result. Mme Stina can hardly give you another picture of a "dressed" garden path, can she?

Want terwijl ze het ene ambachtenmarktje afsluit en zich voorbereidt op het volgende, wil ze die lievelingswol van haar natuurlijk extra mooi in de verf zetten. Zodat die met veel bravoure de hoofdrol kan spelen! En andere wolfanaten evenveel plezier kan bieden als het haar geeft. En daar kruipt heel wat tijd in. Want Mme Stina is niet snel tevreden. En ze wil het beste van het beste voor die wol van haar!

Because while closing one craft market and preparing for the next, she wants her favourite yarn be at its finest! So other wool addicts can enjoy the result as much as Mme Stina does herself. That's why she takes her time to create just the right pattern for the right yarn.

Om op het gemakje verder te doen. En bolletje na bolletje verdwijnt onder de haaknaald.Om eronderuit te komen als granny squares. En nog steeds is er geen enkel vierkantje hetzelfde als het andere.

To continue the work. Ball after ball disappears under the crochet hook. To be transformed in lots of granny squares. And still no square is the same as the other.

Zien jullie het verschil met de vorige foto? De plaid voor de oudste mademoiselle begint stilaan vorm te krijgen. Tijd om de gaatjes op te vullen!

Zomertijd! Summer time!

Dus trekt Mme Stina haar stikmachine vanonder het stof. Om de beloofde "grote-meiden-rok" voor het kleinste mademoiselletje in elkaar te zetten. Nu ze naar het 1ste middelbaar gaat, moet de outfit toch wat volwassener. Die kleine schat toch!

So the sewing machine is pulled out of the dust. And Mme Stina makes the promised "big girl skirt" for the littlest mademoiselle. Now she's leaving primary school, her outfits needs some maturity. Isn't she cute, my little girl!

En ook de outfit van Mme Stina kon wel wat nieuws gebruiken. En had ze daar geen prachtige stof op de kop getikt? Voor de bomma? Nee toch, net zo super hip!

Also Mme Stina's outfit could use something new. Isn't it beautiful fabric she could lay her hands on? Something for granny? No, you don't mean that: it is super cool!

 

Update: lessons learned

Er zijn intussen al enkele dagen gepasseerd. En neen hoor, Mme Stina is echt niet vergeten om haar wasmachien leeg te halen. Maar de week is weer in al haar drukte gestart en voor je het weet, vergeet je om het resultaat te tonen. Akkoord, de "sjaccosch" is helemaal nog niet klaar. Ze wacht nog op voering en rits. Maar Mme Stina wilde jullie het resultaat toch niet onthouden.

In the meanwhile, a couple of days went by. No, Mme Stina didn't forget to get everything out of her washing machine! But this week was started as busy as usual and before you know, you forget to show the result. Allright, the purse isn't ready yet. It still needs lining and zipper. Here is the result:

In eerste instantie was Mme Stina een beetje ontgoocheld. Door de Fair Isle techniek neem je de draad in de andere kleur achteraan mee. En bij het vilten, komt die kleur er dus nog door. Waarschijnlijk ook omdat de handtas in ecru is, erg licht dus. Misschien zie je dit minder als de handtas zelf in een donkerdere kleur is gemaakt, terwijl de tekening met een lichtere draad is.

At first, Mme Stina was a bit disappointed. Using the Fair Isle technique, the yarn in the opposite colour is woven at the back. Filting makes this opposite colour shine trought. Perhaps this can be avoided by using a dark colour for the purse and a lighter one for the pattern.

Maar wat wel goed is gelukt, is de tekening zelf. Omdat de wol in de breedte anders vilt dan in de lengte kan het soms zijn dat je patroon wat langer of korter uitvalt dan voorzien. Voor herhaling vatbaar dus!

But look at the pattern: how well is it felted! It is just how Mme Stina designed it, in exactly the right proportions. Just look at drawing in the previous blog!

Mme Stina is aan een viltexperiment begonnen: ingebreide ranken. Dit is het ontwerp:

Met de Fair Isle breitechniek is het relatief goed gelukt om de ranken in te breien. De ervaren breister ziet zeker het verschil tussen het eerste deel, toen Mme Stina's techniek gebaseerd was op pure theoretische boekenkennis! En dan het tweede deel, na de eerste les in 't Wolwinkeltje. Veel regelmatiger! Aan de achterzijde (want daaraan herken je de "meester", heb ik horen zeggen)!

It worked out pretty good with the Fair Isle technique. The experienced knitter definitely sees the difference between the first part, where Mme Stina's technique is based on pure theoretical book knowledge! And then the second part, after the first lesson at 't Wolwinkeltje. More regular! At the back (because that's where you recognize the "master", as they say)!

En nu is Mme Stina de tijd aan het doden terwijl de wasmachine de reuzensjaccosch omtovert tot ... een mislukking misschien?

And now Mme Stina is killing her time updating the blog. Meanwhile the washing machine is doing the job: let's hope it won't be a complete failure ...
